I’ve always heard the saying that a house divided can’t stand. This principle of life is a sound biblical doctrine. ‘Mark 3:25 (KJV) says, “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” The meaning of stand can be upright, be one, prosper, endure, and other connotations.
Jesus spoke these unapologetically convicting but enlightening words of wisdom.
But who will hear? Who will reap the benefits of Jesus’ words?
If democracy is the cement that holds America together and there are as many opposers as there are advocators, there is a great division. If love isn’t the cement that holds a family, church, and other institutions together, there is a great divide. In both examples, these houses will not endure. They cannot stand.
Jesus made this declaration after the Pharisees called Him a devil because He healed and cast out unclean spirits on the Sabbath. The Pharisees called Him a prince of the devil because he healed a demon-possessed man.
The Pharisees’ denied that Jesus and His healing of the man were of God. So, they boldly said he was of the devil.
Jesus let them know that Satan, divided against himself, cannot stand. Satan’s kingdom wasn’t an exception relative to division.
Any house, kingdom, city, nation, or religion divided against itself cannot stand.
Mark 3:25 speaks to the physical and spiritual consequences of division: disunity, spiritual strife, and destruction.
Division separates, severs, disconnects, and segregates. The infighting and warring of individuals or members of any house weaken the body, which leads to destruction. Destruction is the pulling apart, tearing down, or dismantling of the body.
Without structural harmony, there is division.
A divided thing isn’t whole or all one thing. Division doesn’t unite, consolidate, join, or bring together.
The word house in the quote can be replaced with family, church, organization, political party, society, or any other group.
Therefore, any group or country that’s divided against itself cannot stand.
The goal of any organization, group, or country is to work together in shared beliefs, benefits, and goals. The division creates an internal battle that compromises the body.
Hate and other acts of division are something we all can work against and try to avoid in our families, church, and government.
Do you think the virus is preying on our division relative to mask wearing and following other CDC guidelines?
Be safe.
