Parenting or mothering is a unique and essential vocation, and mothers are the hardest working people on the planet. Motherhood is a vocational calling from God. The word vocation comes from the Latin word vocationem, which used to be interpreted as ‘spiritual calling.’ Being a mother isn’t an easy job. Who is favored for such an extraordinary task of raising children?

God made mothers to be Moms.

There are many positional or occupational titles: pastor, president, doctor, professor, mayor, senator, and numerous other distinguished tribal servants and chiefs. But there are no individuals as demonstrative, honorable, and indispensable in their role or title as Moms. I’m talking about maternal mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, godmothers, and other mother figures who care for and love children.

Of course, Mom is more than a title; it’s who we are. We are mothers 365 days a year and counting any extra during a leap year.

Through instinct, experience, and learning, mothers provide basic and critical necessities for their children and much more.

Mothers are their children’s first teachers – call her Professor Mom. Mothers teach their children to walk, talk, read, write—you name it! Class is always in session.

Henry Ward Beecher said, “The mother’s heart is the child’s classroom.”

Proverbs 31:26-27 states, “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

A Mother grows her children as sure as the roses grow in a flower garden.

Mothers are their children’s first religious teachers about God and the gospel of salvation – call her Disciple Mom. She is the first Bible that her children read. She reverences and obeys God’s Word and teaches the same to her children. Mothers are richly blessed when they know their children are devoted to the faith and love of Christ.

The third book of John 1:4 says, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”

Mothers attend to their children’s health – Call her Nurse or Doctor Mom. She bandages scrapes, scratches and administers herbal teas and terrible tasting concoctions that make things better.

A mother is her children’s first police officer, judge, and probationary officer. Call her – Judge Mom. Godly discipline is a part of her love. Remember when it was unlawful to ride your bike, skateboard, or scooter in the house, cross the street when she said not to, and other rules. Broken rules or laws resulted in punishment.

Proverbs 29: 15 says, “The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to itself bringeth his mother to shame.”

A mother never stops mothering and giving even when her children are grown and have children of their own. Call Mom your Best Friend Forever or BFF. Mothers are confidants, counselors, and friends to their sons and daughters who are parenting children of their own.

Proverbs 1:8-9 says, “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and don’t reject your mother’s teaching, for they will be a garland of grace on your head and a gold chain around your neck.”

In all that a mother is, there is something she isn’t. Call her imperfect. And because she is imperfect, she loves the more by understanding, praying, and loving her imperfect children.

May God continue to bless my mother and all mothers.

Mother’s Day is May 8, 2022.

Happy Mother’s Day to all Mothers!

Be safe.
