If you were on a desert island by your lonesome or with your husband, would you get dolled up every day? Would you wear foundation, eyeliner, lipstick, and dress fashionably if you had access to a wardrobe?
Metaphorically speaking, being homebound during 2020 and early 2021 was like living on a desert island. How did you fare with your ensembles, drawers of makeup, and armoire of jewelry?
Some females don’t need a wedding invitation, girls’ night out, date night, or other events as a reason to pretty up. Some dress up just to feel better, cheer up about a disappointment, or take selfies all day.
So, did you look your best during the lockdown?
Wearing pearls, heels, lingerie—the works—may add confidence and a positive outlook. Don’t forget the lip gloss. Some say these things bring a little cheer and comfort—even on a deserted island.
But others ask why anyone would want to dress up? There’s nowhere to go, and barring hubby, no one to see. What’s the big deal?
I can only tell you about my deal during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Like many others, my husband and I were stranded in the house, a self-protective deserted island. There was no in-person contact with family and friends in other households. Normal life was shipwrecked by COVID-19.
But who felt like dressing up?
Not me! The stress and strain of the possibility of contracting the virus were nonstop.
There were very few reasons to get decked out while being locked up. Makeup and my favorite dazzling blue jean outfit make me feel pretty and confident, but not during a pandemic. I did do a little ‘something something’ for my Zoom meetings. And at home, New Years Day 2021 celebration was also so so.
But other than that, how I looked wasn’t at the top of my pandemic to-do list.
Nonetheless, I did a little better during the lockdown than Smith in my around-the-house comfy sags and rags. Makeup was non-existent—AWOL (absent with official leave).
I thank God for the drive-thru windows at CVS, Jack’s, and other fast-food restaurants. But most of all, thank God for the masks!
The masks were and still are lifesavers.
But the coverups also have cosmetic benefits. I haven’t bought lipstick in a year. Lipstick and masks are messy. If you wax it on, the mask waxes it off. Foundation and masks are no different.
What’s the point in looking your best?
Looking back, why not dress for cheer?
My husband and I are no longer on a desert island. We are fully vaccinated and trying to get back to normal. Family members are no longer off-limits. It’s wonderful to be able to hug my children and grands. Church has reconvened, and we’re still wearing masks.
We attended a birthday celebration. And it felt great dressing up to the nines! The lipstick felt wonderful.
God forbid we have another lockdown!
But the next time I’m on a desert island, I’m going to do things a little differently.
Doing the makeup and looking like a doll wouldn’t be a bad idea
Some say there’s never a reason not to look one’s best.
Be safe.
