Psalm 139 was my favorite Bible reference in 2022; I read, studied, and meditated on the psalm periodically during the year. It’s a beautiful psalm about an awesome God who knows us better than we know ourselves.

David’s thought-provoking words express the timeless human condition and God’s infinite and merciful presence in this personal admission about God’s omniscience.

In the psalm, David devoutly declares God‘s perfect knowledge about him, revealing his insight as a creature and worshiper of the sovereign creator. God knows David‘s name and heart, for God has searched him through and through.

God knew every moment: the what, why, when, and how of all of his thoughts and doings. He knew the beginning and end of every breath, thought, and step.

In the first four verses of Psalm 139 (KJV), David glorifies God as his creator and the master of every aspect and dimension of his life.

“O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising; thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.”

God knows all of our parts; He is the master builder and maker who constructs muscle, ligaments, and bones and regulates the electrical charge in hearts.

God, whom we cannot see, knows and sees all.

Without cameras or surveillance devices, God knows every aspect of our being and lives, for He is omniscient. Like David, those who know Him declare Him to be here, there, and everywhere. He has known every man, woman, boy, and girl of every generation that ever was and will be.

Time does not weary God, blur His eyes, or arrest His Word or statues. Second Chronicles 16:9 says, “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.”

Psalm 139 is David’s testimony and address to God that acknowledges David’s acute awareness, sensibilities, and wisdom about God. David glorifies God for who He is to him.

In verse 14, David says, “ I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”

No one knows us like God, who numbers the hairs on our heads, records the beat of every heart, and knows fleeting thoughts.

I feel special and secure knowing I have no hidden parts, no secret thoughts because God knows my innermost thoughts, habits, and ways. I am an open book to Him and Him alone, who searches, heals, and changes hearts.

I know that God knows my name and heart; He has searched me and knows my thoughts before they appear.

As David says in verse six, I must confess, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.”

God knows me and all!

Be well.
