It’s challenging and sometimes impossible to trace the origins or beginnings of some things.

Finding the origin of Good Friday is no different.

Easter is a few days away, and I wondered when and how Good Friday became Good Friday.

When did Jesus’ crucifixion and death on the cross, the Friday before Easter Sunday, become known as Good Friday?

We’re not talking about the death of just any man, but the death of Jesus, God’s only begotten son. When and how did the death of the savior of the world become known as Good Friday?

Some references say the word good may distinguish Good Friday as a holy day.

Why not?

What took place on Good Friday was God’s holy will.

The good of Good Friday denotes a day to commemorate and a day that the world should never forget.

What believer can forget God’s sacrifice and mercy to save sinners and reconcile them back to him?

Good Friday is a holy day to commemorate and never forget God’s goodness.

On Good Friday, Jesus, innocent of crimes and sins, died for the world’s sins.

Good Friday marks God’s salvation for past and future generations.

Only God is good, and he is good all the time.

Good Friday is about the goodness of God the Father and Son.

What happened on Good Friday?

On Good Friday, Jesus was nailed to the cross for our sins.

Before his death, Jesus requested God to forgive his murderers. He said, ‘”Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”‘ Luke 23:24

The criminal on Jesus’ right rebuked his fellow criminal, revered Jesus, and asked Jesus to remember him when he came into his kingdom.

Jesus was merciful and saved the repentant criminal.

Jesus established new family ties between Mary, his grieving mother, and the disciple whom he loved. When Jesus saw his mother and that disciple, he said,” Woman, here is your son,”‘ and visa versa to the disciple. Mary gained a son, and the disciple a mother.

Jesus died for the sins of the world.

Good Friday was a remarkable and somber day.

The sun refused to shine; there was no daylight anywhere; the earth was dark for hours.

Good Friday was a day of suffering and death for God’s Son but a day of salvation for those who accepted him.

A criminal believed in the salvation of Christ and gained membership in God’s kingdom.

The world’s sins were forgiven for all those who believe in Christ, the Son of God, the savior.

About the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘” Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani?”‘ The Bible’s translation is, ‘” My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”‘ Matthew 27:46

Jesus knew he was fulfilling God’s will according to the Scriptures.

Before dying on the cross, Jesus honored God his Father and said, ‘” Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”‘ Luke 23:46

At the end, Jesus stated, ‘” It is finished.'” John 19:30

Good Friday, April 18, 2025, is recognized by Christians worldwide.

Although there may be debates about the origin of Good Friday, the good in Good Friday is all about the goodness, love, and saving power of God the Father and the Son.

Why is Good Friday Good Friday?

Jesus consented to be the sacrificial lamb who died for the sins of the world.

Whosoever believes in Jesus as the resurrected savior will have everlasting life.

Happy Good Friday, 04, 18, 2025!
